World Cup shocker: Iran on brink of withdrawal — Super Eagles may get surprise lifeline

The worsening diplomatic standoff and ongoing ‘war’ between Washington and Tehran, coupled with previous travel restrictions imposed on Iranian citizens, has raised fresh concerns about whether the team will be able to enter the United States to fulfill its fixtures.

A cloud of uncertainty is hanging over Iran’s involvement in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, following escalating military tensions involving the United States and Israel. President of the Football Federation Islamic Republic of Iran, Mehdi Taj, disclosed that the country’s participation in the tournament is now in serious doubt amid the worsening crisis.

Speaking to Iranian sports outlet Varzesh3, Taj admitted that recent attacks and the tense political climate have made it difficult for the national team to prepare with confidence or optimism for the global showpiece. According to him, after the bombardments and widening conflict, it is hard to expect players, officials and supporters to look forward to competing in the United States under normal circumstances. Iran has already been drawn in Group G of the tournament and is scheduled to play its group matches in Los Angeles and Seattle.

The competition will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico from June 11 to July 19 under the supervision of FIFA. However, the worsening diplomatic standoff and the current ‘war’ situation between Washington and Tehran, alongside previous travel restrictions on Iranian citizens, has heightened concerns over visa approvals, security considerations and broader political implications that could affect the team’s ability to enter the United States and fulfil its fixtures.

Should Iran eventually withdraw or be unable to participate, it could open the door for adjustments within the qualification structure.

Such a scenario may provide renewed hope for countries that narrowly missed out during the qualification process, including Nigeria’s Super Eagles, who remain in contention for a place at the expanded tournament.

While nothing has been confirmed, the situation highlights how global events beyond football can influence the biggest sporting competitions in the world.

For Nigeria and other hopeful nations, any official decision concerning Iran could significantly reshape the path to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
