Suspected disease outbreak hits bandit camps in Niger, Zamfara

A suspected disease outbreak has reportedly struck bandit camps in parts of Niger and Zamfara states, weakening the armed groups and worsening conditions for captives.

A suspected disease outbreak has reportedly hit bandit camps in parts of Niger State and Zamfara State, worsening conditions within the forest hideouts and disrupting the operations of the armed groups. The development is said to have affected both members of the criminal gangs and their captives.

A victim who recently escaped from captivity in Niger State told Daily Post on condition of anonymity that several abductees and some bandits were battling various illnesses inside the camps. The source, who requested not to be named for security reasons, said the health challenges had created tension within the hideouts, as access to medicines and treatment remained limited.

According to the escapee, the lack of food supplies, medicines and healthcare services in the forest has further worsened the situation, leaving many in critical condition. He added that the outbreak, coupled with shortages of funds and essential supplies, has significantly weakened the groups’ operational capacity in some of the affected communities.
