Transporters seek enhanced security before resuming Monday South-East trips

Transporters have urged authorities to boost highway security before resuming full Monday interstate travel in the South-East after the sit-at-home order was cancelled.

Transporters have called on federal and South-East state governments to strengthen security before fully resuming Monday interstate operations following the cancellation of the long-running sit-at-home order. In separate interviews in Abuja, operators said improved collaboration among security agencies would restore confidence, reduce criminal activities and revive economic activities disrupted since August 2021.

“Presently, people prefer to travel on Tuesdays to be alive than to travel on Mondays to lose their lives,” said Kanayo Frankly of ABC Transport. “However, if the government can put the necessary security in place along the highways to prevent attacks, people will have the confidence to begin to travel on Mondays.” Other operators said fear and uncertainty still hinder full resumption despite the directive’s cancellation.
