The NFF clarified that FIFA has not yet ruled on Nigeria’s protest over alleged ineligible DR Congo players, warning that reports of a decision are false and misleading.
THE BIG DECISION! 🇳🇬🇨🇩
I just got off the phone with the Nigeria Football Federation President, Ibrahim Gusau. He said to me, “We are still waiting to hear from FIFA, We are hopeful, by the grace of God.”
Nigerian Football followers, are you also hopeful? 🤔#worldcup #FIFA… pic.twitter.com/2QW2ATyoYU

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has moved to clarify that FIFA has not yet issued any ruling regarding Nigeria’s protest over alleged ineligible players fielded by the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in the 2026 World Cup African qualifiers. The dispute followed Nigeria’s elimination on penalties by the Leopards in November 2025, prompting the NFF to file a formal complaint questioning the eligibility of several DRC players, citing that Congolese law largely prohibits dual citizenship for adults.
Ademola Olajire, NFF’s Director of Communications, described circulating reports of a FIFA decision in favor of either side as “false and misleading,” while General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi emphasized concerns that FIFA may have been “deceived into clearing” the players. DR Congo rejected Nigeria’s claims, with Director of Football Hérita Ilunga insisting that FIFA’s definition of sporting nationality governs eligibility, not domestic citizenship law. The NFF reiterated that the matter remains under review and that updates will only be provided following official communication from FIFA.
