Reps clash over Ndume’s call for US military deployment in the North-East

Lawmakers are divided over Senator Ndume’s proposal for US troop deployment, with some backing foreign support and others insisting Nigeria’s military can handle insecurity independently.

Two members of the House of Representatives have expressed divergent views on Senator Ali Ndume’s call for the deployment of United States troops to tackle insecurity in the North-East. Ndume, speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, said, “Now that we have this window of opportunity, we must utilise it,” adding that America had agreed to provide needed resources “free of charge.”

Chairman of the House Committee on Defence, Babajimi Benson, said the focus should be on the role and capabilities of the 200 US troops already in Nigeria, asking, “Would those opposed to such efforts prefer the nation continue to haemorrhage?” However, House Committee Chairman on Air Force, Alhassan Rurum, disagreed, saying, “Our Armed Forces are capable of handling our security challenges.”
