At least 53 migrants, including many Nigerians, are feared dead or missing after a boat capsized off Libya’s coast, with only two survivors rescued.
Many Nigerians are feared dead after a rubber boat carrying 55 migrants and refugees capsized north of Zuwara, Libya, leaving at least 53 people dead or missing. The incident occurred on Friday after the vessel departed Al-Zawiya late on February 5. The International Organisation for Migration disclosed the tragedy on Monday, confirming that only two Nigerian women were rescued by Libyan authorities.
According to IOM, the boat began taking in water about six hours into the journey before overturning. One survivor reportedly lost her husband, while the other lost her two babies. “IOM mourns the loss of life in yet another deadly incident along the Central Mediterranean route,” the organisation said, noting that over 1,300 migrants have gone missing on the route in 2025.
