A 79-year-old French former educator, Jacques Leveugle, is facing charges for the aggravated rape and sexual assault of 89 minors across nine countries and two murders following a chilling confession found in his personal memoirs.
French prosecutors in Grenoble have revealed a massive international criminal case against 79-year-old Jacques Leveugle, a former freelance teacher and speleology instructor. Leveugle, who has been in custody since 2024, is charged with aggravated rape and sexual assault involving at least 89 minors between 1967 and 2022. Prosecutor Etienne Manteaux, taking the unusual step of naming the suspect to encourage more victims to come forward, stated that the crimes spanned Germany, Switzerland, Morocco, Niger, Algeria, the Philippines, India, Colombia, and New Caledonia. The scale of the abuse was uncovered after Leveugle’s nephew discovered a USB drive containing “15 tomes” of digital writings detailing his predatory activities.
The digital memoirs found on the drive provide a harrowing account of the suspect’s life, documenting “sexual relations” with victims aged 13 to 17 over half a century. The discovery has prompted French authorities to reach out to international law enforcement to identify potential victims in the various countries where Leveugle worked. Prosecutor Manteaux noted that the USB stick was discovered by the nephew while he was “questioning his uncle’s emotional and sexual life,” which led to a deeper investigation into the suspect’s background as both a French language teacher and a science-of-caves instructor.
Beyond the systemic sexual abuse, the investigation took an even darker turn when Leveugle confessed to the murders of two elderly relatives. He reportedly admitted to suffocating his mother, a terminally ill cancer patient, with a pillow in the 1970s, and his 92-year-old aunt “while she was asleep” in the 1990s. According to the prosecutor, the suspect’s own writings confirmed these acts, as in his “memoirs” the man had written that he had “killed two people.” Authorities are now sifting through the massive amount of documentation to ensure all crimes committed during his decades-long career are fully prosecuted.
