Over 200 people have died after heavy rains caused a poorly maintained, rebel-controlled coltan mine to collapse in eastern DR Congo.
More than 200 people have been killed following the collapse of a coltan mine in Rubaya, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, according to rebel authorities in North Kivu. The mine reportedly gave way on Wednesday after heavy rainfall, with women, children and artisanal miners among those affected.
A former supervisor said the site was poorly maintained, worsening the impact and hampering rescue efforts. Around 20 survivors are receiving hospital treatment. Rubaya, under M23 rebel control since 2024, hosts mines holding about 15% of global coltan supply, a mineral vital for electronics.
