Burkina Faso junta dissolves all political parties

Burkina Faso’s military-led government has dissolved all political parties and repealed the laws regulating their activities as part of a sweeping state reform.

Burkina Faso has dissolved all political parties and political formations and repealed the laws governing their operation, the presidency’s communications directorate announced on Thursday. The decision was taken after junta leader, Captain Ibrahim Traore, presided over a meeting of the council of ministers, marking a major shift in the country’s political landscape.

Explaining the move, the Minister of Territorial Administration and Mobility, Émile Zerbo, said the “great and important decision is part of the re-founding of the state.” A statement from the presidency said the proliferation of political parties had led to political drifting, fostered divisions among citizens and weakened the social fabric of the nation.

The statement added that the measure is aimed at preserving national unity, strengthening the coherence of governmental action and paving the way for reforms in political governance. Under the adopted decree, the assets of the dissolved political parties are to be handed over to the state, while Zerbo said, “The draft laws will be passed to the Transitional Legislative Assembly as soon as possible.”
