‘I’m doomed if we divorce’, woman tells court after husband made her swear never to sleep with any man

A Grade A Customary Court sitting at Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State, has adjourned for judgment a divorce suit filed by a man, Tajudeen, against his wife, Halimat, over allegations of adultery and neglect of marital responsibilities.

The plaintiff told the court that the once-blissful marriage he enjoyed with Halimat for more than 20 years collapsed after he secured employment outside town. He said neighbours regularly informed him of his wife’s alleged immoral activities whenever he returned home on weekends, claiming that she dated several men and maintained a particularly close relationship with one man in their neighbourhood. Tajudeen alleged that his wife abandoned her household duties, frequently stayed at the man’s residence, cooked for him, and carried out other domestic chores at his home.

Tajudeen further alleged that despite confronting Halimat and warning her to stay away from the man, she allegedly began spending nights with him and also entertained other lovers in their matrimonial home. He said efforts by her parents to caution and counsel her proved futile, prompting him to seek legal redress. The plaintiff urged the court to dissolve the marriage and also sought an order restraining Halimat from harassing, threatening, or interfering with his private life.
