Nigeria misses OPEC+ oil quota for fifth consecutive month

Nigeria’s crude oil production declined in December, marking the fifth consecutive month the country has failed to meet its OPEC+ output quota, according to OPEC data. Figures reported by Nigerian authorities to OPEC and published in the cartel’s latest Monthly Oil Market Report showed that crude output fell to 1.422 million barrels per day (bpd) in December from 1.436 million bpd in November, below the country’s 1.5 million bpd quota. Nigeria’s ongoing inability to hit its target has been attributed to persistent operational challenges in the upstream sector.

OPEC’s secondary sources, however, offered higher estimates, indicating that Nigeria’s crude production rose from 1.491 million bpd in November to 1.5 million bpd in December. Meanwhile, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited reported crude oil and condensate production of 1.6 million bpd for November 2025, noting that condensates are excluded from OPEC quotas. Looking ahead, NNPC said it plans to “Intensify collaboration with our partners through year-end and into 2026 to ensure improved production performance, maximise infrastructure uptime, and maintain high facility maintenance standards across all our assets,” with the company targeting output of 2 million bpd within two years and 3 million bpd by 2030.
