Full-time Professors in Nigerian universities will now receive an additional annual allowance of N1.8 million, while full-time Readers are to earn an extra N870,000 yearly, following the Federal Government’s approval of a new pay structure for academic staff.
The new benefit, tagged the professorial cadre allowance, applies specifically to full-time professors and readers in public universities across the country.
The Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, announced the new allowance on Wednesday in Abuja during the presentation of the renegotiated agreement between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities.
The development comes amid ongoing efforts by the government to improve conditions of service for lecturers and strengthen industrial harmony in the nation’s university system.
