Yobe Hisbah cracks down, bans men, women from sitting together in public transport

The Islamic morality police in Yobe State, the Hisbah Commission, has announced a ban on males and females sitting together in public transport and at social gatherings across the state. The directive, dated January 6 and signed by the commission’s coordinator, Muhammad Yahudi, was reported by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) and applies to both residents and visitors.

According to the statement, the commission also prohibited “isolated discussions between males and females conducted in a manner that contradicts the teachings of Islam.” In addition, Hisbah warned against reckless driving and overspeeding by vehicles and tricycles, particularly during Sallah and wedding celebrations, citing concerns over public safety and order.

The commission, under the chairmanship of Dr Yahuza Hassan Abubakar, said the measures are aimed at maintaining peace, safety, and upholding Islamic values in Yobe State. It stressed that the directives are already in effect statewide and urged all residents and visitors to comply strictly with the rules.
