Victor Osimhen, reportedly threatened to quit the national team and return to Turkey

According to Arise News, Osimhen was left fuming following his altercation with Ademola Lookman during the 4-0 win over Mozambique at the ongoing 2025 Africa Cup of Nations on Monday.

Having scored a brace thanks to assists from Lookman, the 27-year-old lashed out at his team-mate for failing to pass to him in the 64th minute.

At full time, Osimhen stormed out of the stadium and dropped his accreditation card, insisting he was “done” with the national team and wanted to fly back to Turkey.

Nigeria sealed a place in the AFCON quarter-finals with an emphatic 4–0 victory over Mozambique on Monday, but the dominant performance was eclipsed by dramatic scenes involving Victor Osimhen, who is now reportedly threatening to walk away from the national team.

The Super Eagles responded impressively to the disappointment of failing to qualify for a second successive World Cup, with goals flowing and confidence surging ahead of a potential last-eight reunion with the Democratic Republic of Congo.

However, celebrations quickly gave way to concern as a brewing on-field rift between Osimhen and Ademola Lookman boiled over, despite earlier moments of clear chemistry that produced two Osimhen goals set up by Lookman.

Tensions escalated in the second half when Osimhen reacted angrily to several attacking moves that bypassed him, culminating in a heated confrontation as Lookman prepared to take a corner.

The striker squared up to his teammate, brushed aside captain Wilfred Ndidi’s intervention, and was eventually pushed back by Mozambique defender Reinildo before signalling to be substituted and leaving the pitch at 3–0.

After full time, Osimhen walked straight down the tunnel and later, according to confirmed reports from within the camp, stormed out of the stadium, dropped his accreditation and declared he was “done” with the national team, insisting he was returning to Turkey.

Nigeria Football Federation officials reportedly moved to calm the situation, but the episode has revived concerns about Osimhen’s temperament and cast a shadow over Nigeria’s progress, even as Lookman continues to shine as the tournament’s standout performer.
