Police insist no court order halted tinted glass enforcement

The Nigeria Police Force has dismissed claims that a court order restrained it from enforcing the tinted glass permit policy, describing such assertions as a misinterpretation of a ruling.

Force spokesperson, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, stated this on Tuesday in Abuja while responding to questions on the Nigerian Bar Association’s threat to file a contempt suit against the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.

Hundeyin said the court order often cited merely directed parties to maintain the status quo at the time it was issued, when enforcement was already ongoing. “At no point did any court restrain the Nigeria Police Force from enforcing the tinted glass permit policy. At no point,” he said, adding that the court specifically declined a request to stop enforcement.

He explained that the earlier suspension of enforcement followed consultations with the NBA and not a court directive, noting that criminal elements had exploited the pause.

Citing a recent incident in Edo State where an officer was killed during a pursuit involving a tinted vehicle, Hundeyin said the police would not “fold our arms and watch things degenerate,” stressing that enforcement was necessary to protect lives and property.
