A Chinese technology firm is developing a humanoid robot designed to carry pregnancies and give birth using a synthetic uterus, artificial amniotic fluid and a plastic umbilical cord. The project, developed by Kaiwa Technology, aims to grow a baby from embryo to delivery without a human body, according to its developers.
Dr. Zhang Qifeng, chief executive of Kaiwa Technology, said the prototype robot, named GEAIR, is nearing completion and could enter the market within a year at a price of about 100,000 yuan. “It’s not meant to assist human pregnancy. It’s meant to replace it,” Zhang said, adding that technical details on fertilisation and development were still limited.
The project has triggered widespread debate on Chinese social media platforms such as Douyin, with reactions ranging from optimism to concern. “Women have finally been liberated,” one commenter wrote, while another said, “If the price is only half my annual salary, I’d buy it immediately.” Scientists note artificial wombs have previously been tested on animals, but human use remains uncharted.
