Chatbots have surpassed several major online platforms in global traffic, with ChatGPT emerging as the fifth most visited website worldwide, according to Similarweb. The analytics report shows ChatGPT trailing only Google, YouTube, Facebook and Instagram. It drew 6.3 billion visits in September, accounting for 76% of all generative AI platform traffic. Google’s Gemini ranked second, recording just over one billion users and 12.57% of total visits.
Similarweb’s data also indicates a shift in user demographics, with chatbot adoption expanding beyond younger audiences. In 2023, users aged 18–34 accounted for 61% of traffic, but that share dropped to 53% in 2025 as usage among older groups grew. Meanwhile, The Wall Street Journal reported that OpenAI CEO Sam Altman urged teams to prioritise user experience improvements amid rising competition from rivals such as Google’s Gemini 3.
