Malami back in EFCC custody over ongoing probe

Malami back in EFCC custody over ongoing probe

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has again detained former Justice Minister and Attorney General Abubakar Malami (SAN), arresting him late Monday before granting bail. Sources said Malami searched for two permanent secretaries to meet his bail conditions, days after announcing that the EFCC had invited him to “clarify on some issues.” He earlier stated, “I am willing to honor this invitation without any hesitation.”

Malami was questioned over multiple allegations, including claims he duplicated the recovery of the $322.5m Abacha loot—a charge he later denied. In a statement via his media aide, he described the EFCC’s allegations as “baseless, illogical, and devoid of substance,” adding that recovery efforts were not completed before he assumed office. He said Mr. Enrico Monfrini’s 2016 request for re-engagement showed “the EFCC’s narrative contradicts itself.”
