Republican Senator Bernie Moreno of Ohio has introduced the Exclusive Citizenship Act of 2025, which would require all U.S. citizens holding foreign citizenship to renounce it or risk losing their American citizenship. The proposal could directly impact First Lady Melania Trump and her son Barron, who both hold U.S.–Slovenian citizenship. Moreno stated, “Being an American citizen is an honor and a privilege—and if you want to be an American, it’s all or nothing.” Legal experts warn the bill may face constitutional hurdles, citing longstanding protections for dual nationals under the Fourteenth Amendment and landmark court rulings.
Immigration attorney Michael Wildes called the bill “preposterous,” noting the historical prevalence of dual citizenship among Americans and military personnel. Melania Trump emphasized her support for her husband’s policies while acknowledging the challenges of the U.S. immigration system. The bill now moves to the Senate committee process, with its passage and implementation remaining uncertain.
