Following Tinubu’s order, education commission closes 22 ‘certificate mill’ colleges

The National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE) has shut down 22 illegal Colleges of Education operating across Nigeria, a move that follows President Bola Tinubu’s recent directive to agencies to eliminate “certificate millers” undermining the education sector’s credibility.

The National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE) has shut down 22 illegal Colleges of Education uncovered during a nationwide crackdown. The discovery was revealed in the commission’s official achievements report.

In a statement, the commission confirmed, “The NCCE identified and shut down 22 illegal Colleges of Education operating across the country.” The operation was part of a broader monitoring effort that included personnel and financial audits in all 21 federal colleges of education.

This decisive action aligns with a recent directive from President Bola Tinubu, who ordered regulatory agencies to weed out illegitimate institutions. Speaking at a convocation ceremony, the President warned against “certificate millers” undermining the sector’s integrity.

“The National Universities Commission, the National Board for Technical Education and the National Commission for Colleges of Education are working in alignment to improve the quality of education and ensure that cases of forgery and unrecognised institutions both within and outside the country have no place in our education ecosystem,” Tinubu stated.

The President, represented by Director of University Education Rakiya Ilyasu, reiterated his administration’s commitment to strengthening educational agencies to enhance efficiency and quality, signaling a continued effort to sanitize the country’s tertiary education landscape.
