ABUJA — President Bola Tinubu has directed the swift implementation of free healthcare access for low-income retirees under the Contributory Pension Scheme, describing the measure as vital for “social protection and dignity in retirement.”

The directive was disclosed in a statement on Wednesday by Presidential spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, following a briefing by the Director General of the National Pension Commission, Omolola Oloworaran.

Tinubu also called for the immediate rollout of long-delayed pension increases and a minimum pension guarantee for the most vulnerable retirees.

“The President further mandated the PenCom DG to urgently resolve the longstanding police pension issue,” the statement read. “Members of the police force who serve and protect the nation deserve to retire with dignity and peace of mind.”

Oloworaran briefed Tinubu on reforms to preserve the value of pension fund assets amid inflation and macroeconomic challenges. She also outlined plans to introduce foreign currency pension contributions to allow Nigerians in the diaspora to participate in the scheme.

President Tinubu expressed strong support for the reforms and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to inclusive growth and social protection.
