US threatens sanctions against corrupt judges in Nigeria and other countries

The United States government has threatened to impose sanctions on corrupt judges in Nigeria and other nations following its punitive actions against Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes.

The United States government has threatened to impose sanctions on corrupt judges in Nigeria and other nations following its punitive actions against Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes. U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration, through Secretary of State Marco Rubio, issued the warning after Moraes was sanctioned under the Global Magnitsky Act for alleged human rights abuses.

“@POTUS and @USTreasury have sanctioned Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes under the Global Magnitsky sanctions program for serious human rights abuses,” Mr Rubio posted online.

He cautioned, “Let this be a warning to those who would trample on the fundamental rights of their countrymen—judicial robes cannot protect you.”

The U.S. State Department accused Moraes of abusing his authority to detain political opponents and suppress free expression through secret orders targeting online platforms.

Moraes was designated under Executive Order 13818, which enforces the Global Magnitsky Human Rights Accountability Act, enabling financial and travel sanctions against perpetrators of gross rights violations.
