ASUU-UNIMAID pledged to explore all legal options to reverse the decision and urged national ASUU bodies, students, and civil groups to resist legislative support for the name change
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Maiduguri chapter, has vowed to take legal action against the Federal Government’s decision to rename the university after late President Muhammadu Buhari.
In a statement jointly signed by Chairperson Abubakar Mshelia and Assistant Secretary Peter Teri, ASUU declared it had “vehemently rejected and strongly condemned” the move, calling it arbitrary and lacking consultation.
The decision followed a July 24 emergency congress attended by union members, the Student Union Government, and other stakeholders.
“Congress views any attempt to rename the University of Maiduguri — after 50 years of esteemed existence — as a flagrant disregard for university autonomy,” the union stated.
It also described the renaming as “ill-conceived” and said it showed a “troubling disregard for due process.”
ASUU-UNIMAID pledged to explore all legal options to reverse the decision and urged national ASUU bodies, students, and civil groups to resist legislative support for the name change.
“The union demands that the autonomy and integrity of public universities must be upheld without political interference,” it added.
