Former U.S. President Barack Obama has stirred online conversation after stating that Black boys need layered mentorship — including guidance from openly gay men.
Speaking on The Light Podcast hosted by Michelle Obama, he revealed that a gay professor was one of the most formative influences on his early development.
“Black boys (and really, all boys) need more than just a father figure,” Obama said, emphasizing the value of mentors who challenge and expand one’s worldview.
Following the remarks, an old 1982 letter resurfaced in which Obama wrote, “I make love to men daily, but in the imagination,” fueling renewed speculation about his sexuality.
While some on Black Twitter applauded his vulnerability, others criticized or mocked the sentiment, citing cultural sensitivities around masculinity and identity.
The broader message, however, remains: young men, especially in Black communities, benefit from diverse forms of guidance that break traditional molds and model empathy, openness, and strength in difference.
