Meta has officially acquired California-based startup PlayAI, known for its advanced AI voice cloning tool, Bloomberg reported. According to an internal memo, the “entire PlayAI team” will join Meta next week and work under Johan Schalkwyk, a former Google speech AI leader and recent hire from another voice AI firm. PlayAI’s technology allows for cloning user voices and generating realistic human-like voices for use across websites, apps, and phones.

Meta stated the PlayAI team’s work is a “great match” for ongoing projects such as Meta AI, its AI Characters, and wearable devices. While Meta confirmed the acquisition, financial terms were not disclosed.

This deal is part of Meta’s broader push into AI. In June, the company invested $14.3 billion in Scale AI and hired its CEO Alexandr Wang to lead its new AI Superintelligence lab. Meta has also reportedly lured top AI talent from OpenAI, Google, and Apple with lucrative offers.
