Ogbonnaya Igbojionu, wrongly sentenced to death in 2003 for buying a stolen generator in 1999, has regained freedom 3after 26 years in prison, thanks to Abia State Governor Alex Otti. At 22, Igbojionu was beaten by police and forced to sign a statement, then convicted without proper defense. His plight gained attention when social media influencer Olumide Ogunsanwo and Hon. Simon Oshi investigated and informed Governor Otti. Otti confirmed the case and swiftly intervened, writing to Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun. “It can’t happen to a son of the soil in Abia State when he is the Governor,” Otti stated. Igbojionu was freed and reunited emotionally with his 80-year-old mother. “Thank God for preserving you up to this time,” Otti told him, pledging reintegration support. Otti praised both Ogunsanwo and Abiodun for their roles, stating, “Justice is everything… if you don’t contribute to building a fair and just society, your money is useless.”
