Lagos Deputy Governor slams EKEDC over “crazy” N29m electricity bill for State House

“Last month, in my house, the State House, the bill was N2.7 million. This month, the Eko Disco sent us a bill of N29 million.”

Lagos Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat has exposed exorbitant estimated billing by Eko Disco, revealing a shocking N29 million electricity bill for his State House residence this month – up from N2.7 million in March. “It’s crazy. I bought a meter to avoid estimated billing but couldn’t get it installed,” Hamzat lamented during an MoU signing with the Rural Electrification Agency (REA). The disclosure came as Lagos partnered with REA to extend renewable power to rural communities in Epe, Badagry and other underserved areas through a 60-30-10 federal-state-private funding model.

Hamzat cited another case in Surulere where a tenant paying N2 million annual rent received a N2.8 million electricity bill from EKEDC, calling it unsustainable. The deputy governor’s revelations highlight Nigeria’s metering crisis as Lagos moves to bridge energy gaps through the new REA partnership. “We procured meters but face conversion challenges,” he stated, underscoring the urgency for alternative solutions like the solar-powered mini-grids planned for rural communities under the newly signed agreement.
