As Washington prepares for direct talks with Tehran, Dalton warned, “If they have discounted Iran’s capacity to retaliate, I believe they’re making a big mistake.”
A former UK ambassador to Iran has warned that war between the US and Iran “has never been closer,” amid reports of looming strikes on Tehran’s nuclear sites.
Sir Richard Dalton, who served as Britain’s envoy to Tehran from 2003 to 2006, told BBC Newsnight that Iran “won’t surrender” to Trump’s pressure for a new nuclear deal.
“The risk of a war between Israel and the United States on the one hand and Iran on the other has never been higher,” he said.
As Washington prepares for direct talks with Tehran, Dalton warned, “If they have discounted Iran’s capacity to retaliate, I believe they’re making a big mistake.”
He said US facilities in the region would be targeted, potentially triggering a “protracted conflict.”
Trump said Monday: “If the talks aren’t successful, Iran is going to be in great danger.”
Russia also warned that attacks on Iran’s nuclear sites would lead to “an irreversible global catastrophe.”
