Nigerian Army shakes up command structure in major reshuffle

The Nigerian Army has announced a sweeping reshuffle of senior officers across operational, command, training and staff positions, approved by Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu as part of efforts to sharpen the military’s response to Nigeria’s evolving security threats.

Nigeria’s Army is moving its pieces — and moving them fast.

In one of its most comprehensive command reshuffles in recent times, the Nigerian Army has redeployed a raft of senior officers across key operational, training and administrative positions nationwide. The shake-up, approved by Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, was announced on Saturday by Acting Director of Army Public Relations Colonel Appolonia Anele.

The headline moves: Major General WM Dangana steps in as General Officer Commanding 3 Division and Commander of Joint Task Force Operation ENDURING PEACE, replacing Major General EF Oyinlola. Major General EI Okoro takes charge of 6 Division and the Land Component of Joint Task Force South-South Operation DELTA SAFE, succeeding Major General EE Emeka.

But perhaps the most forward-looking appointment is Major General SA Emmanuel’s posting as Commander of the Nigerian Army Space Command — a signal that Nigeria’s military is planting its flag firmly in the domain of technology-driven and emerging warfare.

Other significant postings include Major General JR Lar as Commander of Army Headquarters Garrison, Brigadier General OM Oyekola as Acting Military Secretary, and Major General O Adegbe as Director of Intelligence and Security at Defence Headquarters.

On the institutional side, Major General KE Chigbu heads to the National Defence College as Deputy Commandant, while Major Generals SO Adejimi and FS Etim take charge of the Army School of Supply and Transport and Training and Doctrine Command respectively.

According to PM News, the reshuffle even extends into the Army’s commercial portfolio — Major General KO Ukandu becomes MD/CEO of Post Housing Development Limited and Major General AI Allison takes the helm at Defence Properties Limited.

The COAS left no ambiguity about expectations, charging the new appointees to demonstrate “exemplary leadership, professionalism, innovation and unwavering commitment to the Nigerian Army’s constitutional mandate.”

In a security environment growing more complex by the day, these aren’t just postings — they’re a statement of intent.
