Seriake Dickson says the NDC is offering politicians a platform for 2027, rejecting claims that the party should be grateful to Peter Obi for its growing prominence.
The simmering tension between sections of the Obidient Movement and the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) spilled further into the open on Wednesday, with party leader Seriake Dickson insisting the opposition platform owes no politician a debt of gratitude.
Speaking during an appearance on Arise Television’s Prime Time programme, Dickson argued that the NDC is the one providing opportunities for politicians seeking elective office, not the other way round.
According to Sahara Reporters, the former Bayelsa State governor dismissed suggestions that the party should be thankful to Peter Obi for emerging as its presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“Don’t make it look like anyone is doing NDC a favour. No one is,” Dickson said.
“Rather, the NDC and I and my colleagues are doing people a favour by granting our platform.”
Dickson also took aim at supporters of Obi who have allegedly criticised the party and its leadership, describing such attacks as self-defeating.
“If you are genuinely supporting Peter Obi and you are disparaging me, the leader, or the platform itself. That is nonsensical,” he said.
The senator stressed that the party demonstrated goodwill by adopting Obi as its sole presidential candidate and selecting a running mate without internal disputes.
He further noted that neither Obi nor other major beneficiaries of the party’s ticket paid for the opportunity.
“Nobody paid shishi. So, if a presidential candidate didn’t pay shishi to be made the sole presidential candidate and sole vice-presidential candidate, that same party cannot be the one saying that small people are underprivileged,” he said.
