Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu has sounded a deeply emotional alarm over the rising number of officers being killed on duty, citing the recent deaths of three EOD operatives in Maiduguri who gave their lives attempting to save civilians from an IED blast.

Speaking Tuesday at the inauguration of a modern Forensic and Investigation Centre at Godfrey Okoye University, established in collaboration with the Enugu State Government, Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu dropped his guard and spoke from the heart about the human cost of Nigeria’s security crisis.
“We are trying our best, and we are losing our men while doing it,” Disu lamented.
The IGP pointed to a devastating recent example — three Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal operatives killed in Maiduguri while attempting to neutralise an IED planted by insurgents. What makes their story even more striking? They refused to wait until the next day.
“They were dedicated officers who wanted to save lives. Unfortunately, they fell into the trap laid by the insurgents, and we lost them,” Disu said sombrely.
Yet despite the grief, the IGP pushed back against any perception of a force losing its nerve.
“We are not sleeping on our oars. We are working day and night. What we are doing may not be made public, but very soon Nigerians will hear good news,” he declared.
According to Tribune,on election security, Disu reaffirmed the Force’s commitment to violence-free polls, while also revealing the police had submitted their formal position on state police creation to the National Assembly.
“As the lead agency in election security, we must continue to update our thinking and procedures,” he added.
