US Congressman John James has called for the release of jailed IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, suggesting Washington could cut aid to Nigeria if he isn’t freed.

Speaking on the floor of the US House of Representatives on Thursday, Mr James referenced his resolution, H.Res. 1321, urging Nigeria to ensure Kanu’s legal proceedings comply with constitutional and international human rights standards, according to Premium Times. He alleged the trial reflected a broader pattern of violence against Christians in Nigeria and called for either a new trial or Kanu’s unconditional release.

IPOB’s spokesman, Emma Powerful, welcomed the intervention as a sign of growing international attention to Kanu’s case, who is serving a life sentence for terrorism following his conviction last November.
