The National Population Commission says Nigerians abroad can now register births and deaths through a secure digital platform, ending decades of paper-based processing.

Federal Commissioner Tony Aiyejina announced the shift on Friday during a press briefing in Benin, according to a Peoples Gazette report citing the News Agency of Nigeria. The system went live nationwide on July 1, replacing paper records used since 1988. Existing records will be migrated digitally to prevent data loss.
Aiyejina said the platform would cut delays, reduce fraud, and improve accuracy for planning in health, education, and welfare. In Edo, the NPC has begun capturing births at health centres, allowing registration during routine immunisation visits without long travel for remote communities.
