Uganda arrests 231 illegal immigrants, including 62 Nigerians

Uganda has arrested 231 foreign nationals, including 62 Nigerians, during a series of raids targeting illegal immigrants and individuals operating businesses or churches without valid work permits.

Ugandan authorities have detained 231 foreign nationals following a massive coordinated operation targeting illegal migration and suspected criminal activities. The intelligence-led raids, conducted on April 27, 2026, spanned across Adjumani and the Bukoto–Ntinda area of Kampala. Among those apprehended were 62 Nigerians who were reportedly operating a church and various businesses without the required work permits or valid immigration documentation.

Ministry of Internal Affairs spokesperson Simon Peter Mundeyi revealed that the Nigerian suspects are being held at a facility in Namanve as they undergo legal processing. Officials believe many of these individuals entered the country under the guise of religious missionary work while allegedly participating in irregular activities, including online fraud. Preliminary investigations also suggest that some suspects were lured to Uganda through deceptive job offers.

In a simultaneous operation, 169 other foreign nationals from countries such as Pakistan, India, Ghana, and Sri Lanka were arrested in a Kampala apartment for lacking valid papers. The Ugandan government has reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing strict immigration laws and has issued a stern warning to landlords. Property owners are now being urged to verify the legal status of foreign tenants before offering accommodation to avoid complicity in immigration violations.
