Trump to FIFA: Give US next World Cup — without Canada, Mexico

US President Donald Trump used a FIFA World Cup reception at Trump Tower on Friday to publicly lobby FIFA President Gianni Infantino to award the next men’s World Cup solely to the United States — explicitly excluding Canada and Mexico — while also floating a potential future US-China co-hosting arrangement.

Donald Trump has never been shy about what he wants — and a solo World Cup is apparently next on the list.

Speaking at a FIFA World Cup reception held at Trump Tower in New York on Friday, ahead of Sunday’s final between Spain and Argentina, the US President turned the occasion into a direct pitch to FIFA President Gianni Infantino for another American-hosted tournament — this time without partners.

“You should choose the United States of America again. This time we will leave Canada and Mexico out,” Trump said, addressing Infantino directly while praising the tournament’s success.

Vanguard reports that Trump also suggested FIFA hand the next edition to another country first, before returning the competition to American soil. “Pick somebody else for the next one, and that will take some of the anger, hatred and steam out of everyone,” he said.

He then revealed an idea Infantino himself had allegedly proposed — a joint US-China World Cup. “Gianni also had another idea. He said we could do China and United States, so you have a nice short flight between games. The players would love that,” Trump said.

The next men’s World Cup open for bidding is the 2038 edition, with FIFA’s hosting rotation rules making countries from North America and Oceania eligible to bid. The 2030 tournament has already been awarded to Spain, Portugal and Morocco, with opening matches in Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay to mark the competition’s centenary. Saudi Arabia will host the 2034 World Cup.

The current 2026 edition — co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico — concludes on Sunday with the Spain-Argentina final.
