South Florida news site exposed for using AI reporters, stolen content

An investigation by The Florida Trib has unmasked the “South Florida Standard” as a fraudulent news site that used AI-generated personas and stolen content to mimic a legitimate local media outlet.

The “South Florida Standard,” a website once presented as a hub for local politics, economics, and sports news, has been exposed as a “digital mirage masquerading as local news.” An investigation by The Florida Trib revealed that the outlet utilized artificial intelligence to create a newsroom of non-existent journalists, complete with fabricated biographies and AI-generated headshots. Reporters like “Sofia Delgado,” described as a bilingual mother from Hialeah, and “Grant Hollister” were found to have no record of human existence outside of their digital profiles. According to Trib reporter Kate Payne, these personas were “creations of artificial intelligence – complete with fake headshots and made-up biographies peppered with South Florida cliches, their bylines plastered on articles that were lifted from actual news outlets, recycled through AI and republished.”

The sophisticated deception extended to the site’s content, which was largely comprised of articles stolen from legitimate news organizations and processed through AI to bypass plagiarism detection. When investigators began looking into the site’s operations, administrators reportedly began removing staff bios and altering content before taking the entire platform offline. The investigation found that the “reporters” listed had social media profiles with copy-and-pasted biographies but no actual posts or updates, serving only to bolster the illusion of a functioning local newsroom.

Media experts suggest that the emergence of such sham sites represents a significant threat to the integrity of independent journalism and democratic processes. By operating in the “shadows,” the creators of these sites exploit the capabilities of generative AI to deceive an unsuspecting public. As Payne noted in her report, the case “underscores just how easy it has become to corrupt one of the country’s core institutions: independent journalism.” The incident highlights a “dangerous development for American democracy,” as these digital doppelgängers continue to surface at a time when public trust in traditional media remains at a historic low.
