Police officers deployed to Owa Oniire in Kwara State have lamented a mass exodus of residents fleeing bandit attacks, even as neighbouring Igbowu community raises fresh alarm over a handwritten attack threat allegedly left by suspected bandits.
Some yet-to-be-identified police officers deployed to the Owa Oniire area of Kwara State, North Central Nigeria, have lamented the mass exodus of residents from the community, blaming relentless bandit activity for forcing people out of their homes and farms.
According to SaharaReporters, a video captured one of the officers expressing shock at the scale of displacement, saying it was his first time witnessing residents flee a community en masse over bandit and kidnapper attacks. Owa Oniire, located in Ifelodun Local Government Area, has reportedly become a shadow of itself, with farms abandoned and homes deserted as fear grips what’s left of the population.
Residents say the government’s promises to tackle the insecurity have gone largely unfulfilled, deepening their sense of abandonment.
The exodus comes as fresh terror grips nearby Igbowu community, also in Ifelodun LGA. SaharaReporters reported that suspected bandits recently delivered a handwritten note warning of an imminent invasion. The chilling message read: “Igbowu and get ready for us now bandit come,” stoking panic among residents who are now appealing to security agencies and the state government for urgent intervention.
With communities emptying out one after another across Kwara South, the wave of banditry shows no signs of relenting, leaving locals to wonder how much longer they can hold on — or how much more they’ll have to abandon.
