Nigerians are increasingly questioning telecom practices as reports of prematurely recycled SIM numbers expose serious risks to digital identity, privacy and financial security.
Nigeria’s telecom sector is facing renewed scrutiny as subscribers report a troubling pattern: phone numbers being reassigned while still in use. Complaints shared across social media and documented by the Foundation for Investigative Journalism highlight how SIM recycling a routine industry practice may be happening too quickly or without adequate safeguards. For many Nigerians, a phone number is not just a contact detail but a digital identity linked to banking, official records, social media and security verification systems.
The issue gained attention after a subscriber said his MTN Nigeria line was reassigned despite active usage. According to his account, the number had been used for over two years before it was recycled within a short period after he temporarily stopped using the SIM. When he contacted the telecom provider, he was reportedly told the number could not be retrieved.
“MTN, a SIM card I’ve been using for over two years now, was destroyed last week. I went to your office to retrieve the sim and your agents are telling me it’s been recycled. I called the number, and the person is in Kogi. The most annoying part is that I am with the SIM pack. All my details are in that SIM, and you’re telling me nothing can be done?”
His experience is not isolated. Several Nigerians describe scenarios where one person receives calls while another receives texts or WhatsApp messages tied to the same number.
This suggests a technical or administrative overlap that raises questions about telecom data management and identity verification processes.
“A lady and I in Yobe State are currently sharing the same SIM card. When you call the number, she answers, but when you text me or WhatsApp me, it goes straight to my phone,” one subscriber explained. Another user said someone else was using the phone number assigned to his MiFi device even though he still had the physical SIM card.
These accounts point to a deeper concern: why are telecom companies reassigning numbers before ensuring they are fully inactive and disconnected from previous owners? SIM recycling is necessary because number pools are finite, but premature reassignment can create serious risks — including data breaches, financial fraud, mistaken identity and even criminal investigation complications.
One subscriber narrated how a recycled number once linked to a crime led to him being tracked inside a bank years later. “MTN almost got me into serious trouble. They sold me a line that previously belonged to a priest in Abuja… Three years later, the line was traced, and I was tracked down inside a bank,” he said. Stories like this highlight how recycled numbers can carry digital history that new users cannot see or control.
Regulatory oversight is another key question. The Nigerian Communications Commission, which supervises telecom operators, had reportedly not responded to inquiries about safeguards around number reassignment at the time of reporting. This silence fuels uncertainty about whether current guidelines are sufficient or properly enforced.
Industry factors may partly explain the trend. Telecom companies manage millions of subscribers, and inactive numbers must eventually return to circulation.
However, the growing frequency of complaints suggests the problem may lie in timelines, verification checks or coordination between SIM registration databases and digital service providers.
Beyond technical explanations, the issue reflects a broader reality: phone numbers have become identity infrastructure. Losing control of a number can mean losing access to banking alerts, two-factor authentication, professional contacts and personal data. When multiple users are tied to one number, trust in digital systems weakens.
As complaints continue, subscribers are left asking the same question: is SIM recycling happening responsibly, or too fast for a country where a phone number is effectively a national identity layer? Until telecom providers and regulators provide clear answers, the risk and public frustration is likely to grow.
