Elijah Oyebode, a death row inmate at Ibara prison in Abeokuta convicted for the ritual murder of student Rofiat Adebisi, has been running active TikTok accounts from inside prison, exposing a warder-run phone and drug smuggling economy that operates within the facility.
The concrete walls of Ibara prison stand absolute against the skyline of Abeokuta, capital of Ogun State. Barbed wire crowns its perimeter fence as armed officers patrol the walkways. But on an evening in early 2026, a man serving time inside those walls opened a TikTok account, tapped a screen, and went live.
The convict’s name is Elijah Oyebode, and he is on death row. According to court records from the Osun State High Court, Oyebode conspired to kill Rofiat Adebisi, a final-year student, on December 22, 2016, luring her into his car before facilitating her murder for ritual purposes. Justice S. O. Falola sentenced him to death by hanging in 2019 after medical evidence showed she died from cardiac arrest caused by strangulation.
Despite this, Oyebode has cultivated an active presence on TikTok, maintaining at least two accounts — one reaching Level 20 gifting status, suggesting transactions running into millions of naira. His second account was found to be impersonating TikTok host and activist Omolola Awoyele, who confronted him after discovering the clone.
Awoyele, who initially believed his claims of innocence and sought lawyers for his appeal, later confirmed he was truly incarcerated via video call, but severed contact after he confessed to facilitating the murder and later began threatening her from inside the prison.
During a livestream monitored by Saturday Tribune, Oyebode disclosed that many Ibara inmates possess multiple phones smuggled in by warders, who also extort inmates by seizing and returning confiscated devices for payment. He alleged warders similarly smuggle drugs for resale and even escort inmates facing death sentences to supervise properties outside the prison.
“I will not deceive you; it is no longer a correctional centre. It is corrupting people more,” Oyebode said on the livestream.
