Ghana’s parliament wore traditional fugu in solidarity after President Mahama was mocked abroad, turning controversy into cultural diplomacy.
Ghanaian lawmakers swapped Western suits for traditional fugu in a symbolic show of unity after President John Mahama faced mockery in Zambia for wearing the garment. Critics had described it as a “blouse” or “dress” during his state visit to Lusaka.
Responding to the backlash, one MP said, “We are here to tell our brothers and sisters in Zambia, and the world, that this is our identity.” Zambia’s President Hakainde Hichilema later joked, “It seems I need to upgrade my wardrobe,” signaling easing tensions.
