FCT exodus: Communities deserted as bandits issue revenge threats via schoolbag letter

Residents of Kungaboku and Paze in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) are fleeing their homes following the discovery of a threatening letter from suspected bandits vowing to avenge the recent killing of their commander by security forces

An atmosphere of terror has gripped the Kungaboku and Paze communities in Bwari Area Council, FCT, after a threat letter from suspected bandits was discovered in a pupil’s notebook at a private school. The letter, found by a teacher while marking homework, warned of a coordinated retaliatory strike to avenge the killing of a bandit commander during a March 7 military operation that rescued 19 kidnapped victims. This threat follows a surge in violence in the area, including the recent abduction of three women from a Fulani settlement and the March 5 kidnapping of retired military officer Bankole Ganiyu and three children

The affected farming communities, which host numerous livestock and poultry operations, have witnessed a rapid exodus as residents share news of the threat on social media and community platforms. The security situation in these Byazhin extensions has been deteriorating for months; notably, in October 2025, prominent veterinary doctor Ifeanyi Ogbu was killed in the area after his abduction. Within the last two weeks alone, at least 12 people have been snatched by gunmen, including the four children of a local pastor and the wife of a vigilante leader, leaving many families traumatized and homes deserted.

To stem the tide of fleeing residents, the Byazhin Divisional Police Officer (DPO) convened an emergency meeting on Saturday at the palace of Chief Ishaya Jagaba, the community head of Kungaboku. While confirming the authenticity of the threat letter, the DPO assured the public of increased day-and-night patrols and urged the community to fast-track the construction of a proposed local police post. Residents were advised to remain vigilant and strictly monitor the activities of commercial motorcyclists and scavengers, who are often suspected of acting as informants for criminal groups operating in the rugged terrain of Gidan Dogo.
