Jumia is exiting Algeria to focus on profitability as Chinese rivals Temu and Shein expand aggressively across Africa’s e-commerce market.
African e-commerce firm Jumia Technologies will cease operations in Algeria by early 2026, marking another strategic exit as it focuses on profitability. The move comes amid intensifying competition from Chinese platforms Temu and Shein, which are rapidly expanding across African markets.
Chief Executive Francis Dufay said Jumia closed 2025 with “clear momentum,” adding, “People thought they would eat our lunch, but it’s not a home run that everyone expected.” The company narrowed losses and is targeting adjusted EBITDA break-even by late 2026, betting on a leaner footprint and stronger core markets.
