The DSS has ordered an internal investigation into the conduct of its operatives after a viral video showed agents violently dragging activist and AAC presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore out of a federal court hallway following his remand to Kuje Correctional Centre.
The Department of State Services is investigating itself — and a video is why.
On Monday, a federal high court in Abuja remanded Sowore at Kuje Correctional Centre pending hearing of his bail revocation challenge, after Judge Mohammed Umar dismissed his application seeking the judge’s recusal over alleged bias.
But what happened next overshadowed the courtroom drama entirely. Armed DSS operatives were captured on video violently dragging Sowore through the courthouse hallway — and the footage went viral instantly, triggering fierce public backlash.
According to The Cable,The DSS, now under pressure, announced an investigation into its operatives’ conduct. Whether that probe leads anywhere meaningful remains to be seen.
The backstory: Sowore’s bail was originally revoked on June 16 after he failed to appear in court. The DSS is prosecuting him on a two-count cybercrime charge over social media posts in which he allegedly called President Bola Tinubu “a criminal” on X and Facebook.
For many Nigerians, the optics — secret police agents roughing up an opposition figure outside a courtroom — raised uncomfortable questions about the line between law enforcement and political intimidation.
