The Christian Association of Nigeria, South-West, has rejected a Senate-passed bill that would fine commercial vehicle passengers for preaching or hawking, warning it threatens constitutional freedoms.

CAN’s South-West chapter has come out swinging against a new FRSC bill that would fine and jail Nigerians for preaching or hawking in commercial vehicles, according to Punch.
The Senate-passed Federal Road Safety Corps (Amendment) Bill, 2026, proposes a ā¦50,000 fine for preaching, trading or hawking in buses, plus penalties for motorists refusing roadside breath tests. CAN’s Bishop Barnabas Akinsanya said the provision could infringe on constitutional rights to religion and expression.
The group has appealed to President Tinubu to withhold assent, urging further consultation with religious bodies, civil society, and transport unions before the bill becomes law.
