Lagos police have arrested a doctor, a traditional birth attendant, and a couple after allegedly arranging the sale of a newborn baby for N2.5 million shortly after delivery, with the buyer still at large.
A baby’s first hours of life allegedly became a business transaction in Lagos. According to the People Gazette, a 28-year-old mother and her boyfriend, unwilling to keep their newborn, lined up a buyer in Ikorodu and sealed the deal for N2.5 million — right on the hospital premises, just after birth.
A traditional birth attendant first handled the delivery, but complications forced a transfer to a private hospital, where a doctor performed an emergency Caesarean that saved both mother and baby. That same doctor is now the principal suspect.
The buyer remains at large, and Police Commissioner Fatai Tijani has moved the case to the SCID’s Anti-Human Trafficking Unit for further investigation, People Gazette reports.
