UK-based Nigerian jailed five years after attempt to rape drunk woman

Nigerian student Qudus Ajeyemi, 27, nicknamed “Spartan,” has been sentenced to five-and-a-half years in prison at Hull Crown Court for attempted rape and sexual assault, with a recorded confession call from the victim helping secure his conviction.

A secretly preserved phone call just put a Nigerian student behind bars for years — and ensured he’ll be deported once his sentence ends

Qudus Ajeyemi, 27, known to friends as “Spartan,” was sentenced to five years and six months in prison after being convicted at Hull Crown Court of attempted rape and sexual assault. The jury reached its verdict on attempted rape by a majority of 10 to two after more than eight hours of deliberation, and convicted him unanimously of sexual assault. He’d been living on May Street in Hull and was in the UK on a student visa at the time of the 2023 attack.

According to evidence at trial, the victim had gone to a house on Tavistock Street after a night out, felt unwell, and was taken upstairs by Ajeyemi, who offered her somewhere to sleep. Prosecutor Charlotte Baines told the court: “Spartan led her upstairs and she lay down on the bed. She thought that he would leave her there to have a sleep. Within a few seconds, Spartan was touching her. She pushed him off and told him: ‘I’m not here for that.’ Her response did not deter Spartan and he touched her again.” The woman fled downstairs in distress, and Baines said Ajeyemi later asked her what was wrong, “knowing what he had done.”

According to Vanguard, Ajeyemi contacted the victim on FaceTime, admitting what he’d done and repeatedly apologising. She kept records of those messages and handed them to Humberside Police in March 2023. Ajeyemi later denied the attempted rape to detectives, even after his own recorded admission was played back to him.

Beyond prison, Ajeyemi was placed on the Sex Offenders Register for life and handed a seven-year restraining order. Detective Sergeant Ethan Anderson praised the victim’s courage, saying she “displayed nothing but immense bravery and strength throughout the complex and lengthy process.”
