Porous borders driving terrorism, says Nuhu Ribadu

National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu has identified porous borders as a major driver of terrorism, arms trafficking, smuggling, and human trafficking threatening Nigeria’s national stability.

Nigeria’s borders are wide open — and the consequences are deadly.

Tribune Online reports that National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu sounded the alarm Tuesday at the 15th National Security Seminar in Abuja, warning that Nigeria’s poorly managed borders were being exploited by criminal and terrorist networks with devastating results.

Ribadu, represented by ONSA’s Director of Policy and Strategy, Amb. Yazid Gbemudu, said weak border governance was fueling terrorism, arms trafficking, smuggling, human trafficking and irregular migration across the country.

His solution? Smarter technology — biometric systems, advanced surveillance, and intelligence sharing — backed by stronger cooperation with neighbouring countries and economic development in vulnerable border communities.

The seminar’s theme said it all: Strengthening Nigeria’s Border Security Architecture for National Stability.
