South Africa’s xenophobia crisis comes home to roost as artists lose gigs, businesses bleed

South Africa’s xenophobia backlash bites back — artists losing gigs, businesses counting losses across the continent

South Africa is now paying an economic price for its xenophobia crisis, with Justice Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi admitting in an SABC interview on Sunday that South African artists are having shows cancelled across the continent and businesses are losing income as African nations push back against Pretoria following mass evacuations of foreign nationals.

Kubayi insisted the crackdown targeted illegal immigrants rather than foreigners broadly, and said the government was deploying consular and support services to protect South African businesses abroad.

The backlash has spilled into football too — Bafana Bafana captain Ronwen Williams said African fans visibly backed Mexico over South Africa in their World Cup opener, a snub he described as “truly sad,” per Punch.
