The Federal Government has kicked off another round of mass terrorism trials in Abuja, with over 400 suspects to be arraigned simultaneously before multiple judges over one week.
Nigeria’s war on terror is heading back to the courtroom — in a big way.
The Federal Government on Monday launched a fresh phase of mass trials, with over 400 suspected terrorists being arraigned simultaneously at the Federal High Court in Abuja, the Punch reports. Six judges are handling proceedings simultaneously, with Justice Emeka Nwite alone facing 58 suspects on his docket.
Attorney General Lateef Fagbemi is leading the prosecution, while the Legal Aid Council’s Aliyu Abubakar heads the defence team.
The week-long proceedings follow a previous phase in April where no fewer than 500 alleged terrorists were tried in just four days — described by Fagbemi as phase nine of the mass trial exercise.
The initiative aims to clear a mounting backlog of insurgency-related cases across the country.
