Falana, Falz, rights groups lead call for June 12 nationwide protest over insecurity

Femi Falana, Falz and a coalition of activists and civil society groups have declared June 12 a day of nationwide protest against insecurity and economic hardship.

Foremost human rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN), musician and activist Falz, and a coalition of civil society organisations have declared June 12, Nigeria’s Democracy Day, a day of nationwide protest over worsening insecurity, hunger and economic hardship.

According to Sahara Reporters, the coalition accused the Federal Government of failing to adequately protect lives and property while implementing policies that have deepened poverty across the country.

The statement, signed by Falana, Falz, activist Hassan Taiwo Soweto and representatives of several groups, including the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR), Youth Rights Campaign (YRC) and the Joint Action Front, said many Nigerians have little reason to celebrate Democracy Day amid mounting challenges.

The coalition lamented continued incidents of terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and violent crime, noting that communities remain under attack while citizens live in fear.

“The Nigerian people deserve a pro-people government that places the protection of lives and property at the core of governance,” the statement read.

The group added: “For years, the people have been subjected to repeated assurances that insecurity is being defeated. Yet the killings continue.”

The coalition also criticised the removal of fuel subsidy, currency devaluation, rising electricity tariffs and increasing living costs, arguing that millions of Nigerians are struggling to survive.

Organisers said the June 12 demonstration is part of broader efforts to pressure authorities to tackle insecurity and reverse policies they described as anti-poor, urging workers, students and community groups to mobilise nationwide.
